My solution to this is very simple: I tend to model everything with 1
unit = 1cm in mind because that way it's easiest for me.
If I need to do anything that might depend on the 1 unit = 1dm rule, I
simply parent everything under a temporary null and scale the null down
to 1/10th. This way I very quickly get the correct sizes.
This would not only work within the metric system. If you model
everything in inches you can scale the null down to roughly 1/4th (don't
have the exact number now) to get to 1 unit = 1dm.

Not to bring this back on topic-ish.
Having spent some time in another package, I really appreciate being able to set my units and having the software "scale" to the selected units. As others have pointed out, making your SI units what ever you want is fine, until you need to some dynamics. Also, as an artist, having to punch in equations every time I need to make sure something is correct is well, not what I want to do. I want to punch in the number and have it correct.
Its really nice to model in cm and then when I switch the units to meters, every thing is scaled over. The character is now 1.83 meters instead of 183cm, the grid re-scales, and all the dynamic values re-scale. Or even if I want to move to inches, 183 cm = 72 inches. Its just really nice having a "true" scale instead of a make your own system.
