Try using Max or Maya. This often eliminates a lot of weird behaviors. LOL

Did you by any chance change the orientation of your particles to “rotation” in the billboard ppg?

Try using a particle player (Create>Particles>from file).  This often eliminates a lot of weird particle rendering issues.
