Interesting. I've not had this problem with the explorer, but I have
experienced something very similar with the Render Tree. I'll have a
material up that I am editing, go off and do something else in other
panels, return to find that I can no longer make any kind of connections
to the material node of the tree. Dropping links on the material
basically does absolutely nothing, It's like the material is locked, but
I can make links to other parts of the tree and I can raise a second
Render Tree and the material node works fine from there. This has
happened 2, maybe 3 times in the last month. Don't know if it's related
to the explorer issue though.
