Hi Eric,

Your best bet is to use fans. I've had some great results by animating
the position of the fan and playing around with the falloff/amplitude
etc. Fan is basically the same as wind but affects a localized area.

I've included a small vid (Sorenson 3 codec) of a setup I did with 8
fans pointing out in a circle. I then ran a script to offset the
amplitude and drop length.
Hope that helps

Thanks Axel, I got that far already. I want to figure out the best way
to apply motion to them so I can simulate the effect of having a large
band of wind wash over the field.

I was going to explore using a wind force and applying a texture map or
a wieght map on the end stiffness, moving it across the field, so that
the stalks will bend together in a localized section. No luck with it
yet though.

Instance objects to the hairs or use textured hairs, both techniques
should work fine but texturing the hairs is obviously more fast when it
comes to rendering.

There is a good tutorial about this on the Softimage tutorial DVDs I
think.

Cheers,
Axel

Any idea how to make a wind blown field grass/wheat? I haven't used
hair all that much, can anyone recommend any techniques? I am not sure
forces would be the best way to go. Anything that would let me use
weightmaps or luma maps?

Thanks,
