You know that always sort of bugged me.  There really should be a basic node that will give you a colored BG to work with from scratch.  I have used the gradient node in the past and deleted one of color tabs, making it one solid color.  I feel like that's kinda messy.

OK, I get it now. I was trying to generate something from scratch with a vector paint or paint node. So you always need an image from file  to start with right?

Apply a texture to an object, then go into the FXtree and under Clips, select that texture. Now you have a FromClip & ToClip which you can get between. e.g. put a gradient node or filter between the two fxtree nodes & get realime feedback on the textured object.
 
I've found it very useful for altering things like emssion maps for particles, hair etc. I was using the wipes with noise for basic waves with the push op recently, all good fun.
 
There's a whole chunk of fiddling to do in the Transition->SMPTEWipe node.

I've seen people take something they have made in the FXTree and use it as a live texture map the in the scene. Can someone please direct me to a tutotial or something on how this is done? I've been looking through the manuals and online but haven't come up with anything yet.
