Ahhh!  
 It's an odd place for it though, no wonder I missed it.  I knew it must be in there somewhere.

Took me a few minutes of hunting today remember where the gradient node was too, under "composite"

go to  Ops/plugins/Pattern Generator and select "solidColor" type ...
