Look up events in the SDK for that. There are specific events for rendering.

hmm... tried that but no luck.

what I am trying to do is change some parameters for a material on a specific pass. I figured I could write this as a script which executed only at rendertime... I have a post-script which changes the parameters back...

Perhaps I'm mistaken as to what kind of things can be done with a pre-script? is this pre-scripting function only for stuff that happens 'outside' xsi, like shifting files around, renaming things on disk etc?

The section of documentation that you quoted is pretty much the *only* thing I can find anywhere on this subject. and doesn't really say that much to a non-disciple...

'and any other process you need to perform'...

hmmm....
