this is probably one of those situations where BSP can make quite a difference, Morgan. Although it's certainly puzzling that it should change so much over a point release.

Subject: 5.1 Hair Instancing Render times

Hey all,

Just for the record…..

When you try and render a 5.0 scene with a hair instancing in 5.1 it causes much slower render times. We did have SSS shading on our instances but the render time went from 20 mins a frame up to 2.5 hours a frame. This is easily solved by deleting the 5.0 hair and recreating it in 5.1 and got the render times back down to a respectable 20 mins.

Subject: Sprites and environment maps refraction

I have a transparent object, a sheet of water, where use a sprite shader to clip the edges of the water sheet, creating a nice animatable edge using animated mattes. Works fine, but I use an environment map for reflection and refraction, and problem is can see the environment map through the part of the water sheet which is supposed to be clipped by the matte through the sprite node, which I don't want. Makes sense? I was looking at the Ray-Type switch but it doesn't seem to provide what I need.

Does someone have a tip they can share?
