Unless I'm missing something obvious here... (which is possible ;-)

Isn't this more a grooming issue?
Say for example you get a regular sphere (8x8 U&V) and apply hair.
No matter what your hair count if you look 'down' the normals you'll always see mesh.


Subdivide the mesh to hell, increase the hair count to zillions and without grooming it's still the same deal.
So...

And, last question, Morten why is non-instanced hair orientation important?

No, I'm sure I'm the one missing something. I only have
Essentials so I'm not up on the fur capabilities in Advanced.
So would using a texture solve Morten's issue?

Probably not, his problem is more to do with distribution than length.
