It still isn't possible in 5.0 or 5.1

For me, this is a huge issue that would be very welcome
as a change in a future version.

It's one of the reasons XSI was so frustrating for me at the beginning as an
ex-Maya user.

Sharing nodes is also a cleaner, faster, more efficient way to work. Maya is
not known for it's efficiency (and actually, XSI is!)
but Maya always had an elegant way to share and reuse assets within and
across shaders.

It's certainly not something that makes me want to stop using XSI (or, dear
God, go back to Maya) but it would make me SO much faster
with what I do.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
