dof in fx tree

Subject : dof in fx tree
I'm using a zpic run in the fxtree with the depth of field node, but I need to create some extreme dof effect, which this isn't doing.
I've played with all sorts of settings, and even linked 6 dof nodes together, but still not what I want.
Can I convert the zpic to a gray scale and run it all through a gausian blur?
