Despite having full reverse lookup on our DNS it just didn't work - it requires you to reconfigure your entire network to suite it (static IPs are mandatory). A system can't truly be considered scalable if you have to manually enter an IP for every machine. I don't even manually install a new machine here - let alone assign an IP by hand.
In order to get an acceptable level of integration and usability (read simplicity) it required a lot of work. Most of which I'd already put in and had it integrated within XSI menus etc, but the reliability without reconfiguring the network was pants.
We never got a same day response on support and given the amount of work it needed to get it performing it certainly didn't justify the price tag. I modified DrQueue to work with XSI, but am now just going to code something from scratch.
The extra effort gets paid back with complete flexibility, working a lot on something that you still don't have complete (source code) access to isn't worthwhile. At least not when it's just a farm manger. To justify the money (at least for something as relatively simple as a farm manger) it has to work flawlessly with minimal effort. Which from everyone I've spoken to XSI farms about Royal Render does.
Cheers,
Alan.

well, first of all. I haven't used RR at all... so I can't really
compare. But here is why we chose Rush over RR in terms of features.
1.) You can use as many applications as you want without having to pay
an extra fee. With RR you need to pay a fee. As we are a post house we
not only do 3D, but a lot of projects are also done in Combustion and
After Effects.
2.) Scalability, this is where Rush really shines out. You can write
your own render scripts (quite easily) to also do other automated
tasks. It's totaly open and you can modify it as you wish. This is
probably the number "ONE" when it comes to chosing.
3.) Stability. Rush has never failed on me as a render dispatcher
(batchserv *shudder*).
4.) Platforms. It runs on Windows (32 & 64), Linux, Irix, Mac OSX.
I hope it helps
