i can say that xsi ess 5.1 crashes less than 3ds max 8. but i did not 
digged in too deep yet. some issues i had was when applying some strange 
shader setups or using particles and rendering them with the region 
render and escaping the region render while rendering (but that is not a 
program bug, it depends on how you set your scenes up).

generally i am very happy. but saving every five minutes became habit 
for me since i used 3ds the last years.
