You guys must be doing something strange with you linux servers :) I
have a Dual Xeon 1GB ram and it has no lag at all. But I'm not running
Suse (which shouldn't make any difference).

If you have a lag it might be a few things.

1.) Samba passwords, it might just be so that it's checking the user
before you are allowed to save the file on the server. There are many
ways of setting this up. I would not recommend that you use any kind
of "wizard" to get it up and running. Check out this "howto" and you
should be all set for doing it manually.
http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba.html (you can skip the part about
installing samba though)
Make sure also that the server is in the same workgroup as all the
other machines.

2.) Using Sata drives? Made sure they working properly, check if the
controller is working as it should (some linux distros might have
problems with Sata Raids.. so I've heard..).

3.) Check the network switch that you are using. And also check that
the network card(s) are working in full duplex and is set to GBit.

Use Gedit or Nedit or any other text editor that you can use to edit
/etc/samba/smb.conf . And start and stop the samba share with:

starting it
# smbd -D
# nmbd -D

stopping it
# smbd stop
# nmbd stop

Sandy,

I up my server to 4 gigs of ram but didn't see any noticeable differences.
I find it strange my computer running XP Home on a different workgroup
have no such lag
issue. It is a little puzzling.
