Since I have seen this handle-hog too, I downloaded Process Explorer from Systernals to learn more:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
It shows that this one huge svchost process is the mother of a lot of central windows services - networking etc.
This is also a great tool btw. if you want to have a closer and more detailed look on the performance of single processes. Doubleclicking on a entry reveals a lot of information.
I can also recommend their Autoruns Tool:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
to deactivate some of the stupid stuff software thinks people need nowadays...
!But only use it if you know what you do!

i too have a svchost process thats above 1,000 that i thought to be weird...
i went a head and killed it, no unwanted behavior yet, so it may not be
a necessary process

If an svchost process uses up to 1,300 handles, is this some
suspicious activity?

iTune UI is a resource hog; by itself plus a couple of XSI it should
be ok, however. Perhaps there could be a few other resource hogs on
your machine running simultaneously.
To check this possibility, start the Task Manager, go to Processes,
and sort the list by clicking twice on the "Handles" column. (Add
that column with the View menu if it isn't here.) Try to get rid of
as many applications as you can that use more than 1000 handles. If
XSI is using more than 2000 handles, use a more simple layout in XSI
to minimizes the number of unnecessary views.
more generally try to run a diagnostic tool to check the ram on your
computer, and don't overclock (it results in random RAM malfunction)
