No, I'm saying that if you're running xsi from the same machine as the
license server then you don't *have* to set the spm_host variable. However,
if you do then it should be correct. You haven't said whether you are
running from the same machine or not. I don't know what you may have already
done to those files so I don't know if you should do nothing or not.

Like I said before, there's only a few things that could go wrong here.
Let's go through the possibilities. These are the things we know:-

1. you can get a 5.0 license so the server is running correctly, serving
licenses and can be seen.
2. 4.2 will run from a 5.0 license.
3. 4.2 when you run it doesn't get a license.

You need to focus on why 4.2 doesn't get a license. These are the reasons I
can think that it can't get a license:-

1. the spm_host variable in the 4.2 setenv.bat file is set incorrectly.
Or
2. a 5.0 is running when you try to start 4.2. This could be you running it
and not understanding yet that you can't have both versions running at the
same time or there could still be a 5.0 zombie running somewhere that you
aren't aware of.

Both of the last two possibilities have been suggested to you already but
you haven't said if you've looked into them or what the outcome was if you
have. There may be other possibilities but I can't think of one right now
and you should eliminate these before going further.

1. get a 5.0 softimage prompt and type echo %SPM_HOST%
2. now get a 4.2 softimage prompt and type echo %SPM_HOST%.

Post back here with the results. Cut and paste them from the dos windows so
there's no confusion.

Also, check in the task list to be absolutely sure that no other xsi is
running on the machine.
