Just to let you know: messages with multiple answers may not yield as
much answers as separate threads...... especially if they need
elaborate discussion.

I don't know if this has been covered but in 4.2 when I merged meshs,
  I could just freeze in the operator and the previous mesh is gone.
  Now in 5.1 it keeps the two there, sure it is handy incase but is
  there a way I can toggle this on or off? And if I recall a previous
  post on 5.1 and the IMED mode something to do with when modelling in
  5.x it keeps it on, does someone want to refresh my memory or should
  I just not worry about this ?
