If you can get one side close enough to the other I'll put a shrinkwrap
operator set to "nearest vertex" high up in the stack (animation
construction for instance) and (working on modeling construction mode)
kind of shift the points around en masse in proportional mode.
Beats manually snapping vert by vert at least...
