Well, since you're supposed to be working in Maya anyways, it serves you right. ;-)

What worked for me:
1- Duplicate your source object
2- Scale the dupe by -1 in the symmetry axis
3- Re-select your source again
4- Apply GATOR, then select the dupe
5- Tell GATOR to transfer shape animation

In my situation, however, there is no rig, envelope, or anything else. Just shapes applied in the shape manager.
