They were tested quite exhaustively here, I think by Which magazine.
Traffice polution consists of either fine particulates - diesel exhaust and
tyre wear - or gases. The particulates are finer than the filters can cope
with so you can be sure the gasses won't be filtered.
Besides, most of the air I breathed when I tried one was coming through the
5mm gaps around the sides where it wouldn't fit my face.
