Woops.  I should clarify.  Multiple output ports.  Though, we've actually found a couple of hacky solutions that get at what I was looking for earlier today.  For example: attaching color shares to the inputs of a 8 color mixer that simply passes through the main shader to the material node.

Overriding the inputs of the color shares, allows shaders that are hooked up in the rear of the shader to be exposed from a standardized root (and hence be overridden easily and reliably)
