Gvim, without a doubt. Or if command mode editors bother you, Emacs is a
nice compromise. Both should be installed on base linux.
There's also Scite but the power of a command mode editor is a huge time
saver.
Clarifying; gvim is the graphical version of vim, the terminal extended vim.
For most people I think gvim is the easier. Version 7 is just out and it's
sweet.
