You may want to look at Cute because it's based on Scite, but it can be extended with python. So you can bathe in the delicious irony of coding tools that are missing for coding in python in python.

There's also Scite but the power of a command mode editor is a huge time saver.
Clarifying; gvim is the graphical version of vim, the terminal extended vim. For most people I think gvim is the easier. Version 7 is just out and it's sweet.
