it's something new in 5.x, and it's either the op being placed at a
different entry point (as an hidden op), or simply a new intended and
extended behaviour for freemodelling.
but you can still very easily work around the problem, just select the
ops you want to freeze and use the normal freeze, it won't screw up your
shapes.
re-estabilishing the connection after it's been frozen, afaik, isn't
possible out of the box, but it's trivial to script.
