Yes I've been doing that, but the light distribution's falloff is too rapid
(even if I play with the falloff in the render PPG). Its like a hack. And
also the fact that the FG accuracy for such small object light sources is
almost nill. I'm always dealing with over blasting right near the object or
no light at all away from the object.

Being new to XSI I didn't want o comment on this. But you has me scared 
that I just dropped a big chunk of change on XSI Advanced and a basic 
feature was missing...

So I tried it out. I can easily make an object a lightsource using Final 
Gathering. You just give the object incandescence. It may not be some 
"physically accurate" (which is a fancy name for a rough approximation 
based upon an oversimplification of the problem...) light like Maxwell 
has, but it sure looks good.

I even attached a torus "light" to the camera to make that Ring Light look 
that fashion photographers love so much (that look I despise...).
