i know what you mean. when i first came over from max i was used to
the same behaviour. there are several things that i do now and i dont miss
the rectangle selection way of max/maya any more. 1st, i made myself a
button (or hotkey) to switch to raycast poly island selection. most of
the times it selects the parts i want. its equivalent with element
selection max just that it works better. i made it a button because
the official way always seems to involve the selection filter dropdown
and looking it up there.
fo a rectangle selection you can use the edge selections, they work
with not completely surrounded edges. you can turn this edgeselection
in polys or points. maybe one can make a script with the edgepicker
and then converting that automatically in poly, so you like.
when you really dig in the selection modes and combinations of it, you
find a faster way of doig things in almost any case. the range,
loop/ring selections are getting me almost there every time. and i
love raycast. ususally i paint the selection on the mesh within a
second. and it works faster and WAY more precicse than trying to
rectangle select a organic surface.

you can change the behaviour of the transform gizmos in the
preferences (under transforms i guess). switch it to transform and
select. that will give you a select picker when you are outside of the
gizmo. i believe the old softimage way was to move stuff with
lmb, mmb, rmb in the 3 axes without a gizmo. you will find this very
handy when you are working in a way that not let you see the gizmo.
you still can manipulate things. but you have to get used to that if
you want. either way is open to you.

i dont know.. its not an "extra" step. its work of about 1 second and
thats the rightclick on a model and save it out. it takes even the
name as filename and doesnt ask you. models never failed me so far.
just as bernard said. keep everything the model needs within. then you
are fine :) i exchanged quite some models from 4.2 to 5 and within 5
and never had problems....
