The ambient settings shouldn't be a problem with models created after v3.0.

My twopenceworth regarding models...

I've used XSI since version 1.yuk and have only ever imported and exported
between scenes with model files. never had a problem providing they are
*not* referenced and that they are stored internally in the scene. There's
nothing wrong with storing them externally, but it seems way to easy to
delete them or simply fail to move or archive them with the rest of your
stuff.

the only issue I've ever come up against with non-referenced models is that
*sometimes* - I can never really determine the conditions under which it
occurs - the model file seems to bring with it some globals from its
original scene. most notably the ambient light settings. No idea why that
happens.
