Have you looked into Point Oven?
It's a point caching tool that is included in XSI 5.1, and there is a
plug-in for Maya also.
This would be very fast to work with.

Right. That's what I'm going to do, but since duping is so slow, I was
hoping for some workaround. Like exporting from the Shape Manager.
