The old behaviour of the export model (which kind of forced everyone into the "appropriate" model export workflow) wouldn't allow you to export anything but XSI models. If you had something else selected, as Kim said, XSI would spit an error message at you.

The new behaviour (I can't recall when it made it in?) does lead to confusion.
It looks only half cooked as it is (or indeed broken), especially since if you select an object which lives under a model, it will tell you "your selection is invalid, do you want to select its model" etc (old behaviour), however when try to export an object which lives under the scene root, none of that happens...
Maybe a bug should be logged as well as a feature request it seems...
