Have you already tried to create hard edges on the boundaries of that object? It looks like the distortion is caused by interpolated vertex normals. To check, take a look at those normals, they have to be splitted up and not appear unified at the edges of your object to make it work the way you want.

I get this on at least 90% of my objects….

It gets less drastic when I put more subdivision but its never “clean”.
