Rainer,

Sounds like it is almost worth while to get C4D just for the "RipTide" plugin.
We have been using Polytran for our conversion and are pretty happy with it but mostly for using it
to import CAD files.
Do you use both packages for the projects and what are your likes and dislikes?

And thanks for the offer, I don't have anything to test at the moment, but I will keep your offer in mind.

.OBJ export/import is as lame as the XSI one (above 4.2). WHat helps immensely is the 'RipTide' plugin for C4D which is about the best .obj interpreter I have encountered. Even meshes which make 5.1 crash can be read with C4D/Riptide once and then imported in 5.1 with far less problems. However, I am having a lot of problems in reading textures and bump maps defined in .mtl files in XSI. The .OBJ imported into XSI require hours of post import adjustments compared to the C4D import which almost every time yields great material/texture and even bumpmap assignments as far as they are defined in the .mtl file.

There is a great fbx exporter in C4D written by Maxon. However, I am having limited joy in reading those (and other) fbx files into 5.1 as I am somewhat fighting with the import plugin into XSI...
I avoid any import/export to 5.1 like the plague. If you need a test done, let me know I can convert into various formats in C4D is you like to judge the output.

That RipTide plugin makes C4D a .obj weapon of mass conversion!

No I haven't used it. I was running XSI on a project along with some other people on the same project using C4D.

Kris,

Did you used C4D? and how did you like it?

I didn't have much luck in this department at a shop I was recently working at. I found that Cinema 4d has pretty lame export options. Obj files were always merged into one mesh with no UV data. 3ds files were a total disaster. Maybe use Maya or Max as a middle man?

Anyone have experience with C4D and possible workflow between it and XSI?

Thanks,
