That is possible. Though for most scenes during testing I am finding that 
my quad opteron renders so fast that it is actually slower to use the 
network processors for the Q preview renders. But this varies based on the 
scene and how you store the textures.

Sadly there is no way to turn off the network slaves for the preview 
separately than for the main render (Quit XSI, and comment them out in the 
ray3hosts file, and restart XSI)

Try using the tool provided called "UserTools". You should find it in 
Programs->SoftImages Products->SoftImages XSI 5.1

This will put the .ray3hosts file in the right place and it will make the 
file have the period as the first char (which you cannot do from 
explorer... you have to use a shell).

IPs are fine. You might be sure that any firewall you have on the render 
nodes permits incoming traffic on that port.


Hopefully this will get you going. Otherwise tech support will talk you 
through it on Monday...
