Sorry it's totally unrelated...
I always got problems with prim rays and particles. In case it's of any help, I think we ended up making a seperate pass for masking the particles in the frame. Lame workaround but I have nothing better to suggest ;-)

After some more testing I found why I couldn't see any reflections of the particles in that particular scene, while it seemed to work in other scenes, it's something with the view angle. But I have no idea what the cause is, looks like a bug of some sort. I think I've nailed the problem as shown the screenshot below. I'll upload this scene if anyone's interested.
