Funny thing is, we had this exact functionality in XSI up to v2, I think. It turned out to have some serious stability issues and was therefore unmapped from the default keyboard layout. It might still be there, haven't had a look for years now. Of course we'd like it to fixed before using it...

Node preview could also function as a simple short-circuit for surface, whereby the material would have an implicit connection to whichever node is being previewed, and in a previewing context, that input would be rendered instead of the actual surface input.
