faking hair/fur?

Subject : faking hair/fur?

Hello list!

Got a furry cartoon character. The prob is hair takes waaay to long to render for this project so I was wondering if any of u guys know any clever ways of faking fur. I mean since he's cartoony id basically just need to break up his sillouette a bit but I cant come up with any ways that give a decent result.
