Thanks very much for this sound piece of advice. Apart from a slightly rougher look, it definitely solves the problem.

 

A bit of a shame though, I think the “Fine” option generally gives some very nice results.

 

There used to be a plugin (subdividedisplace) that could generate polygon surfaces from textured displacements, but I can’t find it anymore.

If possible, use Parametric not Fine, this will solve the problem,
