I've been using a Mobility Radeon 9800 with XSI for about 2 years now. 4.x was bad and would freeze the system regularly (especially doing modelling), but the 5.x release has improved a lot over that. Still the occasional freeze, but usually not more than once.
I think you'll be happy enough. But if you can get a nVidia go for it. Their drivers still cooperate better with XSI, and after switching my workstation from ATI to nVidia things just worked.
