Rendermapped texture slowness

Subject : Rendermapped texture slowness
Does it make sense that every time I render something using a rendermap with Unique UVs it take a very long time (like 40mins on a quad Opteron280) to render the first time. Once the first render is complete subsequent renders are fast. This applies to the render region (not matter how small the area) or generating rendermaps.

I wonder if the Unique UVs are slow, especially on my 220k poly object.

Or am I perhaps missing something else? Anyone else have such slowness with unique UVs and rendermaps?

Thanks,
