No, the thread should be titled, "How to reinvent the wheel".

CinemaGraphics developed such a tool 10 years ago (ShadeTree) with support for mental ray and RenderMan. Users build shaders interactively with shader ball and node based interface. Shadetree spits out a compiled version of the resulting shader for use in the target application. Sound familiar?

Even without shadetree, mental ray used to have shaderballs, but they were discontinued years ago for whatever reason. What we're seeing coming down the pipe is a resurrection of old ideas packaged in a new body. the main difference being that it will be supported by the renderer developers instead of a 3rd party.
