i agree....
over the years i have repeatedly said to anyone that would listen (and a few that wouldn't)
that 'we' the users would rather have a half assed, badly intergrated tool, than NO TOOL AT ALL!

i give you Maya ocean as an example, ropey piece of code, limited use, too many badly documented controls
but one time in 10 it WORKS, and that time is worth the effort, heartache and frustration of the other 9 times!

while people sit on their high horses and preach about integration and interoperability, some guy in his bedroom
writes a fluid sim for maya (which already has one!) and sellls it, even though it's not a great piece of code, it
plugs a gap, fills a niche etc....

also, if someone released a 'poorly' developed addon, there is the chance of people whinging about it's
usefullness.... but like you said, if it forces bigger manufacturers hand's, to release something better, then
it seems like a great idea!!

You see, these kind of tools are fun to do for a production, where talented td's give you in advance the limitations the software can have.
Turning them into a commercial product can become a nightmare.
I've seen it all already. Today the cheapness of softwares is good for the users, but it killed the 3rd party developers.
And I'm sure, should we release (in case we 'might'), the day after Soft would come up with its own.
(In fact, that would be a good reason itself to release it. When you've been waiting for the bus for ages, you light up a cigarette, and there the bus comes).

so if it was done again, with slightly different code, perhaps, it could 'maybe' be something
that 'might' be released as an addon, for say, oooh $100 a pop?

maybe?

hmm?

Yes, it was done for AS, 2 years ago, out of the Fedkiw-Stam-Jensen article and some free code available.
