particle import from RF4 in the 5.1 addon doesn't work

also for a good crash, try having mesh creation on in RF and hit the step backwards button, instant crash everytime here....

obviously fluid sims are VERY hard, and you expect crashes, and a steep learning curve, but i agree with Kim, that there are
production savvy features missing from teh software, and a general lack of interaction on behalf of the RF team

i have been bugging them for more than a week for my version 4 upgrade license without a SINGLE answer!

bleh, fluid pictures indeed!

Version 4 seems to be very fun to work with ... I have the feeling that all RF3 problems are gone. The danger of overwriting files is still there. I am testing now since Friday last week and it's still stable. No crashes, just pure »simulation fun« because there's no client, no deadline ... not a special problem to solve *:-)

The only problem I have now is that the command line usage for creating meshes from existing particle cache files will not work. RF creates soemthing to RAM but it will not saved to disk. Strange.

But I am still stucked with the common fluid sim problem: finetuning and waiting, waiting ... waiting. The rythm is now: testing with some low settings daily, starting a complex overnight simulation of particles ... beeing stucked with Mesh creation the next day and that it's not what I expected. I think, lack of deep experience is also an important fact here why RF is hard to handle.

The method using a Mesh is a main problem IMO. It would be better just to get particles into XSI and use a shader?! There's an option in the Addon but trying to import Particles into XSI failed [XSI hangs or nothing happens].
Anyway I have no idea yet to what kind of XSI stuff the Particle files will be translated.

>> Actually I was being a bit melodramatic. It?s possible to set it to save scenes at every nth frame or after a period of time, but it?s not that obvious and given the well known inherent instability

and the fact that it doesn't work reliably and isn't documented properly! the only thing that works for me is to manually do it. and you have to be very careful about what you are doing so as not to accidently overwrite a previous sim files from the same project... effectively you need to rename everything (particles cache, emitter ouptut etc etc) or create a complete copy of the project. this is not really a comfortable step at stupid a.m.on a heavy project.

>> and the nastiness of losing not only a nights computing but also all the work that?s been done up to the point it crashes, you?d expect something a bit more in your face.

I completely agree with you there mate! took me ages to find the 'feature' and then work out what it did exactly and wether or not it was me or if it was broken... still not sure actually.... think its time for me to take a look at version 4...
