In this case, if you'll excuse the language, bollox. Realflow 3 has been
sold these last few months with an offer of RF 4 dangling in front of
purchasers. RF3 had XSI plugins and, unless I missed something, nothing was
stated at the time about XSI plugins not being available for RF4. Anyone
buying wouldn't be being unreasonable in assuming XSI support for RF4 and
could quite rightly be angry right now, I think.

To answer Jordan's question about difficulty, no it's no more difficult. In
fact it's easier. And you the old methods are still supported. Any changes
would be at the RF end.

I'm sorry, but this time it's just more lousy support from RF.

I think the RF stand at SIGGRAPH is an opportunity to badger them about it.

A conundrum of sorts eh? No 3rd party dev of plugins for XSI due to
limited market share but limited adoption of XSI due in part to the
lack of 3rd party support. I remember writing Npower to ask if they had
plans to port PowerNurbs and some of their other tools to XSI. The
reply was when they started getting some help/cash from Softimage
they'd do it. This was about
1.5-2 years ago. I guess there is only so much Soft can do. I look
forward to see what they have in store for Siggy.

Simple answer: market share.

When XSI shows evidence they're taking foothold in the market,
developers will pay more attention to XSI user's needs. If you're a
3rd party developer, you usually have to pay licensing fees and invest
the time/energy

in supporting another API, not just technically, but also in your
customer support and sales. You're not going to invest until you see a
sizeable customer base to make it worthwhile. When Maya, Lightwave,
3DSMax and all the other players have larger marketshares, it's a no-
brainer who to support

first. Unfortunately, nobody thinks XSI has a large enough foothold to
make

it worthwhile to support - which says a lot about how far XSI has to go
to catch up. If you want to get 3rd party support for XSI, you'll have
to be a

very squeaky wheel.

Why is it that XSI is always the last in the bunch to get plugins, if
any at all? Is it hard to code things for XSI or something? I see
lightwave/c4d and even rhino getting plugins and XSI is always left out
in the cold.

Sigh.

And they don't even put a date on it in the FAQ. If they say it's a
priority, as they do, give it a schedule, get it done. It's not as if
it's that hard to write geometry importers for xsi, is it.
