To give you guys an idea, 6-10 games shops, maybe even less, is all the entire Bundesrepublik has to offer for it´s reputation. There´s of course several dozen shops doing some sort of 3D, a handful of postproduction facilities and a couple of film shops doing a film every now or never. Plus architecture.
There´s more jobs posted on vfxpro.com in a week than what I have seen (not gotten) in the last two, three years...
Sometimes, I could hate you guys for having so many options :-)
Cheers
tim

Yeah Chicago is pretty much only games (3d wise). Studio Gigante is another studio btw. I think there are around 6-7 total if I can remember right and quite a few smaller joints like Matt said.
I wish 3d was bigger in Chicago because it's such a great city.

Hmmm that's kind of not attractive for 3D artists then. So unless you want to make 3d for games you're pretty much stuck freelancing? No movie effects, cinematics or such?

Chicago! great city.
Yes, I've cut my wrists staying employed there for years. There's basically two types of studios: big games studios (Midway, EA, Dreamation, ...), or the 5-man-or-less variety (Sol Design, Digital Kitchen, ...). Every now and then a mid-sized studio will start up, but it usually goes belly up or gets acquired by somebody else before too long. In either case the studio disappears. The smaller studios are usually staffed with folks who have
been there for a long time and probably won't be leaving any time soon - so not too many openings. The larger studios usually have a bunch of openings, but are located in inconvenient places. So, you're either working in the heart of downtown or waaaaay out in the outskirts of the suburbs. Not much inbetween.
The "chicago creative directoy" has a listing of places employing animators, but be careful as some studios have multiple companies under the same umbrella (ie: 3 studio listings may actually only be one studio serving multiple markets). Might want to check out the back pages of Post magazine too.
Just to get a foot in the door of the market, I'd say start with the big
games studios and work towards other goals later. A lot of animation work at smaller studios is project-to-project and not year round. Many companies do animation, but it's not their meat and potatoes. Usually you'll need to be well versed in illustration or print work to justify your existence when
there's no animation projects on the plate.

Hi, A friend is looking for 3D studios in Chicago. Do you know of any? I tried google-ing but not much comes out!
Also, where's that list of all the studios Stefan had put up a while back? Thanks for any help. --- Unsubscribe? Mail Majordomo(at)Softimage.COM with the following text in body: unsubscribe xsi
