  Tried it but it doesn’t seem to work for some reason. I guess something else must be going ‘under the hood’. If I turn on the ‘bump’ parameter inside the image node it works, but is kind of limited. I guess it will have to do for now.

Have you tried to use the front-back shader and plug this shader into the bump input of your material?

This should work just fine. You get some color-vector conversions, but that does not matter.

Have not tested it, but I don't see a reason why it would not work.
