I'll take confusing for the power that gives. The bumpmap nodes means
the bump will apply to anything pluged directly or indirectly into the
input (i.e. just follow the connections left).

The main reason people call it confusing is because the bumpmap
generator isn't particularly intuitive. If this node were rewritten so
that pretty much anything could be used as an input without being
particular about how it gets its UV coordinates then it'd be
acceptably usable for most artists.
