Hi Sam,

Well I've got good news and I've got bad news.

The bad news is I haven't tried later versions of glibc on 32bit
architecture with XSI. I too agree it's ridiculous that we need to run
software that's 2 years out of date for the latest XSI. It will run
with the later versions on 32bit, but the scripting engine goes to
hell and basic UI commands will get flaky and often just not work.

The good news is I've got 5.11 running flawlessly on 64bit gentoo with
the latest of everything (even xorg 7.1 with the ABI breakage - ewww).
5.11 is the easiest XSI release so far to run on 64bit linux. Just
install the emul libraries then to launch XSI throw a script in your
/usr/bin folder called xsi with this in it.
#!/bin/bash
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib32" linux32 /usr/Softimage/XSI_5.11/Application/bin/xsi

Hopefully you're running 64bit, if not I'd be interested to see how
you go trying to run glibc 2.4 with nptl nptlonly use flags. I'm going
to be shifting the office to 64bit in the near future as well.

Cheers,

Alan.

Given this post is over 6 months old I would like to bring it into the
light of day again

I tried installing the ebuild with a foundation license on my laptop so
I could practise making the perfect nurbs sphere while not at work

So I downloaded the foudnation gz file and put it in the approiate
folder and ran the ebuild to install

then when I looked again the installer wasnt 5.0.1 anymore but 5.11.

I soldiered and edited some variables' values and path names and
updated some md5 sums and rolled my own ebuild

Note: I am on modular x

I emerged it up thinking my perfect nurbs sphere wasnt far away and it
appear to complete the install sucesfully

I went to run it and it gave me the message "Abort". Im not prolife,
people are allowed to decide thier own fate but that wasnt the result I
was looking for.

I continued on doing some reading and Alan suggests that glibc 2.3.3 or
less is the way to go

I sighed a loud sigh and thought if I want my foundation to run on my
gentoo laptop ill have to downgrade from glibc 2.3.6 to 2.3.3

but then it came up withthe date of this software 20040420????

wtf? do I really need to use a glibc that is over 24 months old?

so as I type I am downgrading to glibc2.3.3 and then will have to
rebuuuuuuidla whole truckload of packages to this glibc if they are
linked against features of glibc2.3.6 im going to be ina real pickle

so does anybody knwoa good way of linking softimage against one version of glbc and the rest of your system against something more modern?
