The chapter "Hierarchical Subdivision Surfaces" in version 3.4.8.6 says:
"Hierarchical subdivision surfaces are supported by mental ray versions prior to 3.2 when the mental matter <node88.html#INDEX328> library /libmisubdiv.so/ is linked in. This library implements the Loop subdivision scheme for triangle meshes, and the Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme for quadrilateral meshes."
And in chapter "Subdivision Surface Geometry":
"Subdivision surfaces are available in mental ray as an optional product, called *mental matter*..."
As far as I know it is not part ob mental ray standalone.

What do you mean? I found it only in Maya but not in mental ray standalone at least not in the mental images documentation. Can you point me to the page? I thought only mental matter has it.
Mental ray html documentation, main index page: "Subdivision Surfaces".
Never used it.
