They don't, but they do help you work better. And faster.

It's also worth pointing out that XSI is very good at ensuring that your
dataset is valid, trying to prevent you from building inverted faces and
multiple-winged edges. Other applications aren't so good at that and it is
pretty easy sometimes to miss some of that stuff.

One thing that really does get me though is the amount of work I always have
to do on purchased models; cleaning up edges, inversions, multiple faces and
just plain rotten shading from poorly placed geometry. The people who build
these things are supposed to be pros. There's no excuse.
