Well, I personally am very happy that Softimage didn't take the road of Maya and Max, where they seem to have moved the second or third digit of their version number to the first place ;-)
I 100% prefer a solid and worthwhile update over a yearly one - with bug fixes inbetween as it should be.

The other extreme - like ZBrush is doing it with ZB 2.5 currently - is also not desirable, since it tends to overstretch the users patience.
(And I don't even go into messiahs Siggraph 2000 sale which isn't delivered fully until today...)

So far I think Softimage has a very solid policy.

...although I would love to see some movies about the features already revealed at Siggraph ;-)
Since curious I am for sure...
