never mind.... we have found the problem... the dns server here was
going on it's knees and once restarted we now have a fully working
network again :)

The XSI browser uses exactly the same API as the windows browser (we've checked!) to access network files. Maybe they're using undocumented flags (nothing unusual there) to enumerate the files that might speed things up over the network, although I highly doubt it.

We do read additional bits in (for thumbnails for example) and some file info data but nothing that would cause a huge hit.

That and the favourites and project list. I'd easily trade a bit of speed
for those, although I've not really noticed a huge difference between xsi
and windows.
